THE CALLING TO THE MINISTRY OF LITERACY USING THE BIBLE
Pastor Gilberto Stevão and his wife Maria have worked since 1961 as educators in Christian schools in Brazil, where the language spoken is Portuguese. In 1986, Pastor Stevão was recovering from an Angina pectoris attack ( partial heart attack ) when God revealed to him a method for teaching illiterate people how to read and write using the Bible.
THE VISION
The vision of God came through Habakkuk 2:2, 3, 14. "The vision is yet for an appointed time". "Write it in great letters, that he that run may read it " "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea" God spoke to me that now is the appointed time that all people would learn to read with the Bible. Because the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord when all people start reading the Bible. Our faith stands alone in the written message of the book of God, the Bible. "Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near".
OBEYING THE CALLING OF THE VISION
Pastor Gilberto Stevao and his wife Maria accepted the challenge of teaching the illiterate Portuguese speaking people from all over the world how to read and write, preparing "a Method" and "Notebooks of Activities".
THE METHODOLOGY
The Method of Literacy using the Bible has also been translated into Spanish and people from different Spanish spoken countries like Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina among others are being reached by this vision. Every single difficulty in the Portuguese language is worked on. The Notebooks of Activities are made up of messages with words like God, Jesus, Heavens, the House of God, God said and Jesus said etc. Step by step the consonant blends are taught and then words and then phrases, until the "illiterate student" learns the Biblical verse and finally the text as a whole. This method also provides the 4 basic mathematical operations using the Bible. After finishing the 1st program, the 2nd will follow when the student will have a multidisciplinary study including History, and Geography and Sciences also using the Bible.
THE BIBLE AS THE READING BOOK
The Bible itself is the Reading Book and all the "Literacy Method" was developed using it. A second step is to show the student how to practice and memorize what she/he is learning using two distinct Notebooks of Activities. In our Method there are Notebooks of Activities designed specially by ages: one for children and older people, and another for youth and adults following a Pedagogic Teaching Process.
THE BIBLE
The Bible used with this method is printed in England and distributed by The Trinitarian Bible Society.
There are 57 Evangelical denominations using our program.

THE WORLD NEEDS THE WORD OF GOD
Besides Brazil, this program has reached Portugal and Africa. Pastor Gilberto and Maria Stevao (his wife) are in their sixties now, and want to take their vision to all other Portuguese speaking countries of the world which includes the Islands of Madeira, Azores, Sao Tome, Funchal, Antilles, Guinea Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Ceylon, Macau, and East Timor where missionaries are being trained to teach Portuguese. East Timor has just ended a civilian war and the needs of this country are huge. " I am a debtor both to Greeks and to Barbarians, both to the wise and to unwise" Romans 1:14. We believe that every church must have a class in Sunday School to teach how to read and write. The Bible must be taught starting from its very letters. We believe in what is written in this book and we teach that everyone must read this book which is the Bible. Only the reading of the Bible will bring true and deep changes in each person, here in Brazil and anywhere in the world.
